Two Events of Last Week That Shows Buhari Loves The Igbos

Mohammudu Buhari
Contrary to the the former belief that President Muhammadu Buhari may be displeased with the people of the South-East following their renewed agitation for self-determination, two events of last week has shown that Mr. President may not have any grudge against the region.

It could be recalled that since Buhari assumed office May 29th last year, that there has been protest after protest in the South-East region. The protest was majorly triggered by the arrest Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of one of the Igbo group, IPOB, and the Director of Radio Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing trial bordering on treasonable felony, organisation of unlawful society, and illegal possession of items among others.

Since his arrest, there has been this common assumption that the President does not like the people of Igbo race owing to his refusal to release Nnamdi Kanu to them. Besides, there has been speculations of the region being marginalised in the country.

But just last week, President Buhari and other Nigerian delegation was on a trip to China for international relations. Part of the agreement signed during the trip was an MoU to include yuan in Nigeria's foreign reserve. This agreement if implemented will definitely facilitate trade relations between the two countries. It will alleviate the hardship on the masses being orchestrated by dollar scarcity.

There is no doubt that the Igbos will be the major beneficiary of this agreement between Nigeria and China. This is because the Igbos make up the majority of importers in the country. And trading is also one of the predominant occupation of the region.

Again, the same last week it was reported that President Buhari approved Akanu Ibiam Airport to embark on flights to China, USA, and other parts of the world. This means that Akanu Ibiam International Airport construction contract awarded by former President Jonathan is being consolidated by Buhari administration.

This is a good news for the South-East region. And to many, it shows that President Buhari is committed to the development of the region.
