Bank Customers Lament As Diamond Bank Apply FG Stamp Duty Charge

The report reaching us has it that Diamond Bank has been witnessing unprecedented traffic since this week as the bank began to debit her customers for stamp duty.

Many of the bank customers according to our correspondent has been trooping into the bank to ascertain the reason for what they described as extortive charges. It was gathered that the charges for FG stamp duty took another direction since Tuesday 7th February 2017 when the bank began to take the charge.

Some of the customers interviewed said that they had to come to the bank because the charges were no longer bearable. Some said that they were charged more than N2000 for stamp duty within a space of two days. They lamented that the worst part of it is that the charges keep coming every day.

Some of the customers were heard demanding for the closure of their accounts. The impatient ones were seen clearing all the money in their accounts. This they did through withdrawals and transfers.

Our correspondent learnt from one of the bank staff who pleaded anonymity that the charges were pill-up of last year's transactions. She explained that the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN directed all banks to charge customers N50 stamp duty for every third party deposit into customers account. The bank official explained that Diamond did not debit customers for those stamp duty charge in the year 2016. He said that what people are witnessing now is the charge for the deposits of 2016.

Recall that the Federal Government had on 20 January, 2016 imposed a compulsory stamp duty on every bank account holders when they receive money into their accounts. The question Nigerians are asking is, did we vote APC government to task us to death? Why is the FG which has not been able to provide jobs for its citizens tasking them of the little money that they struggle to get?

Anyway, 2019 is around the corner and we still have our voter’s card.
